So, I am like a gazillion other people out there.... I've got a Laing SM-303 recirculating pump that, after 25 years, decided to have the impeller go south. Unfortunately, Laing won't sell impeller kits anymore, which is too bad. The new pump, under review here, is nice, but I have strong suspicions that it won't last as long as the SM-303 did. This pump just feels f ar more "cheap." But it *does* do a great job so I can't really complain until I know how long it lasts. My minor gripe, however, is that Laing didn't make this pump compatible with the housing of the ever-so-common SM-303 series. As such, you can't simply unscrew your non-working SM-303 and screw on this new pump. That would be far too easy. Instead, you really do have to replace all of the plumbed in housing, which is a pain. Fortunately, I thought ahead when I piped my recirc system and I put unions in there, but taking those apart is always a pain. You have to fiddle with them a LOT before you get them right. It would have been *so* very much nicer if Laing had designed this new pump to be compatible with the SM-303 brass. And because of this, I've dinged the pump a star (and because it feels far cheaper than their historical products... I suspect this one is made in China... It just has that cheaper feel to it). All in all, I'm not too sure if I would buy a Laing again, unless this one lasts like the old one did. But it is impossible to say until a decade or more goes by... :-)
I purchased this pump about 15 months ago to replace my old SM-303-BTW (I think thats what it was, anyhow, it had the timer) that I had for about 14 years. I thought I was going to miss the timer, but didn't. For my application I could turn the speed down to the lowest setting, and still had good hot water everywhere! I am lucky I could run it slow, because it does get kinda noisy when sped up! I was loving it!! That was until last week! I woke up to a strange, loud, banging sound which turned out to be the pump impeller. I was afraid I was SOL because it had been over a year since I purchased it, and I read on here that its not covered under warranty if purchased thru Amazon! I contacted Laing, they told me to contact my local rep. The rep sent me back to Laing, but gave me the name and number of who to contact in customer service. I did, and since it was less than two years since the date of manufacture, they are sending me out a new impeller free of charge. Hopefully it was just an isolated incident of some FOD passing through the pump threw it out of balance and wore it out. Its a great little pump, and although I encountered a problem, Laing stood behind it even though it was purchased thru Amazon! Once you have had one of these, you can no longer live without them! When I go to friends houses I sometimes even wonder if they have hot water because it takes so long to get to the faucet! Update 10/18/2015: My first old 303 lasted 14 years without a problem. The new model lasted 15 months, and I run it on the very lowest speed setting. Laing sent me an impeller free of charge, and it too only lasted a couple months. Then they sent me a new pump, and impeller, and also an old style 303 impeller. The impeller was shot again after only another couple more months. I now installed the old 303 style impeller and its working fine again, but I am not holding my breath. Although, maybe the design of the new impeller is flawed?! However, Laing now tells me I have it plumbed wrong! My plumber installed it returning to the top of the hot water tank exactly like fig. 3 of their instructions for THAT application, except that the pump is mounted horizontal. The instructions show the pump can be horizontal or vertical, just not mounted with the motor facing up. Totally correct per their own instruc tions! They are telling me that it should be installed per fig. 4, but thats for a return to the bottom of the hot water tank!! I am assuming they are saying that because I am now experiencing failures, and that figure shows the pump horizontal, but that figure is for an entirely different application! They say they want the air vent before the pump just because the pump is mounted horizontal! I sure don't understand why that would matter, as the same water and air pass thru the pump no matter how its mounted, and the instructions show it can be mounted either way! And the typical placement of air vents as far as I know, is usually as high as you can put them, as in fig. 3! Why did the old 303 last 14 years?! Like others, I reused the 303 upper housing (since it was soldered in) and now thought maybe it is actually different, and maybe thats the problem, but they insured me it is the same . Now I am shopping for a spare impeller, which led me here. It would be nice if you could just buy the press in impeller bearing rather than entire impellers at nearly $100 per shot! Anyhow, getting frustrated, and removed another star. I think I will go with another brand next time!

I bought this to replace my old model Laing SMT-303-BSCW. The old model was 33 Watts with timer and ran for 12 years. This one is 12 Watts with variable speed only; that's fine since we ran the old model 24/7 and essentially never used the timer - relied on the thermostat cut-off. It's not clear to me whether this one has a thermostat cut-off -- I think not. I have a dedicated return line to the water heater and my entire hot-water run is insulated and runs under the house in the crawl space. The longest run from the water heater is 300 feet to my MBR shower, so a recirc pump is a must have for me. If you've run your system for as many years as we have, I highly recommend replacing the housing - ours was full of corrosion and deposits. I also replaced the check/swing valve which is between the pump and the return to the hot water heater - it was corroded and nearly completely clogged. I see in some reviews that some people simply screw the new motor in the old housing. I replaced everything since the new housing has a slightly different internal shape for the different spherical motor design and, as I said, my old system was so corroded. Anyway, I set the motor on the lowest speed and I get super hot water at the furthest run without a problem. That means I'm using about 10 watts, or about 1/3 the energy of the old system. For now, 5-stars and I'm hoping to get as many years out of this model (time will tell).

I had installed this recirc.pump when I moved into this house and discovered that the hot water heater was on the oposite end of the house and it took 45 to 60 seconds to get warm water to the master bathroom.Since then it takes 5 to 10 seconds.Well that was 10 years ago and since I had gotten very used to almost instant hot water everywhere in the house. When the pump died, I immediately began searching for a replacement and to my surprise I found it on Amazon, recd.it in 2days,simply shut off the water, installed it in the EXISTING pump body, plugged it in and WA LA almost instant hot water, without changing any existing piping!! A big surprise to find a company still in business for t his amount of time tells me this is an excellant product.

I have three Laing pumps, because the previous owner of the house (an architect) redesigned everything except the location of the water heater, so it took forever to get hot water to any spigot. One of the three finally crapped out after about 10 years and this is the redesigned model. Virtually the same, except the barrel is shorter by about an inch. (The Laing system, like nearly all recirculating systems is not without problems, specifically the "warmish" water that ends up in the cold water line for a few minutes until it dissipates, but that is a small price to pay for not having to run the tap for several MINUTES to get hot water when you want it.) Very sturdy, virtually silent, trouble free.

Used to supply hot water from one side of the house to the other a good distance away. Customer very happy. Loves having hot water almost as soon as she turns on the water!! Highly recommend.
Bought this unit to replace yet another failed TACO recirculation pump. I placed my first Laing recirculation pump in service in 2005 and it has been running ever since. Never a minute of maintenance and it just keeps on chugging. This model is virtually silent and has a flow-control so you can minimize any water noise. This unit is very small; about the size of a soda can. Expect a lifetime of service from a Laing pump.

I had an old pump of the same manufacturer which stopped working. To my relief they haven't changed the design and so I bought and the pump body screwed into my old cap. Plugged it in and worked! Shipping was amazingly fast. Great experience!

I had to buy a r eplacement for my old circulation pump and found this exact model replacement. Even though it's the same pump by the same company, it runs substantially louder that my previous one! As it is bolted to the wall in my system, there is no way to dampen the sound inside the house. Replacement was relatively simple though and if it lasts 13 years like the previous one, it will be worth the price! I wish it came with the built in timer-even though I currently use an add-on one.
